Document Overview

This is the full text of the Right to Information Act, 2005 (Act No. 22 of 2005) — the central Act of Parliament that received Presidential assent on 15 June 2005 and underpins every RTI request GMADA receives. It was enacted "to provide for setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens to secure access to information under the control of public authorities, in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority," and it establishes the Central Information Commission and State Information Commissions.

Key Provisions & Structure

The Act is organised into six chapters covering: the right to information and obligations of public authorities (including the duty to proactively publish information, which is what GMADA's own "Statutory Disclosure under RTI" section — where this document sits — exists to satisfy); the designation of Public Information Officers (PIOs) and Assistant PIOs, referenced elsewhere in this section's Appellate Authority/PIO/APIO listing; the request and response procedure, including the statutory 30-day response timeline; the categories of information exempt from disclosure (Section 8, covering matters like national security, cabinet papers, and personal information with no public interest); and the constitution, powers and appeal process before the Information Commissions.
